Some cultural experiences who make me who I am…

A significant aspect of my advocacy efforts is related to growing up in rural, eastern North Carolina. Growing up in this area exposed me to the needs of underserved populations, such as improving the quality of mental health care and education in rural areas, as well as recognizing the fiscal needs of rural residents. I see education as a viable avenue to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for rural area students and am committed to producing research and programming to will support the success and retention of underserved students.

Dr. Loni Crumb's Biography and Background

Dr. Crumb is an Assistant Professor in the Counselor Education Program in the Department of Interdisciplinary Professions at East Carolina University and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from the University of Georgia, M.A. in Education and Community Counseling from Clark Atlanta University, and B.A. in Psychology from North Carolina State University. She has authored scholarly publications and professional presentations related to counseling and wellness, student affairs in higher education, and holistic college student development. Her research interests include counseling in rural areas, promoting retention and persistence of underserved students in higher education, college student mental health, social justice and multicultural training, and professional standards of practice in college counseling.

Professional Work

How do your beliefs about diversity, social justice, and equity manifest themselves in your research, teaching, advocacy and/or service?

A common thread in my research, teaching, and service is improving the quality of life for persons from historically marginalized groups. I have intersecting marginalized identities that have impacted my life in both positive and negative ways. I strive to be a voice and a source of strength and empowerment for those who are not in positions to do so at the moment.

Who are your collaborators in this work? Who - in the field, at ECU, and/or in the College of Education - also does diversity and equity work that you respect?

Social justice advocacy is extensive. I am a firm believer that "team work makes the dream work" when it comes to advocacy efforts. I continually collaborate with colleagues, students, and community partners to explore projects that advance the well-being of underserved populations. Within the ECU Counselor Education Program, we take an integrated approach to wellness, teaming with other behavioral health professionals and community stakeholders to expand behavioral healthcare to serve children, youth, and families in underserved counties in rural eastern North Carolina. Our Accelerate Integrated Mental Health Initiative (AIMHI) is a project that gives me drive and energy, as it allows me to educate others about rural mental healthcare and partner with students and community members in an effort to devise programming to address various gaps in service needs.

How do you hope your field and society might change as a result of your work and that of others doing similar work around this issue?

I can best address this question by providing one of my favorite quotes from First Lady Michelle Obama:

"When you've worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed."
