Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The Master of arts in teaching (MAT) includes teaching areas as follows: art education, business education, elementary education, English education, family and consumer sciences education, health education, Hispanic studies, history education, middle grades education, music education, science education, and special education. The College of Education, the Schools of Art and Design and Music, the Colleges of Health and Human Performance and Human Ecology, and departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences offer subject matter courses and content specific methods courses, as well as supervise interns in specific teaching areas. 

The full-time program is designed to be completed in twelve months, beginning in the summer II term and finishing the following summer. The MAT is designed to facilitate the earning of an advanced degree while also completing requirements for a North Carolina license to teach.

Some of the programs are offered part-time for lateral entry teachers. Most part-time candidates begin in the NC Teach alternative licensure program.

  • Unconditional admittance to graduate standing.
  • Acceptance to the MAT teaching area and assignment of an advisor.
  • Completion of initial 6 semester hours with a 3.0 or better and an entrance deficiencies or conditions.

Transfer credit is only accepted when it is fulfilling a deficiency or content area knowledge.

Resident Requirements for a MAT degree program are met when a student has completed the Summer I and II experiences and the Internship.

Participation can be full-time or part-time in some areas. Full-time candidates begin the program in June of each year.

The MAT requires a regular graduate application that is available on line through the graduate school or by contacting the Graduate School directly.

  • 39 semester hours of graduate work, 9 of which are internship hours.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (final GPA).
  • Meet specific teaching competencies.
  • Completion of a teaching portfolio.

Candidates apply through the ECU Graduate School. After a student has been admitted to the Graduate School, the student may seek acceptance into the College of Education and one of the licensure areas offered in the MAT program. Minimum requirements for admission to the College of Education's MAT program include:

  1. Overall GPA of 2.70 on a 4.0 scale on all undergraduate work from an institution accredited by a regional association.
  2. Bachelor's degree in a discipline designated by the chosen teaching area.
  3. Satisfactory entrance examination scores on either Graduate Record Examinations or the Miller Analogies Test. This must be completed prior to admission to the MAT.
  4. Three letters of recommendations from persons who can attest to the applicant's academic competence or ability to graduate work directly submitted to the Graduate School.
  5. A writing sample submitted at interview.
  6. Interviews with the MAT Coordinator and program area faculty. This is set up by the coordinator once application is reviewed.

Note: Any student who does not take classes during a regular semester (fall/spring) must reapply to the Graduate school in order to reactivate his/her status as a graduate student and access to his/her ECU email account.
