The Elementary Education MAED program is a 36-hour program which generally takes candidates two years to complete. The check sheet for the program, below, provides the set of core courses (12-hours) required for all MAED students. In addition, students choose one of four strands: content pedagogy, teacher leadership, early childhood, or academically gifted.
Our courses are offered in both face-to-face mode and in on-line formats, depending on the course and the semester of offering. We are increasing our on-line offerings as the demand increases and as faculty become more interested in offering courses in that format. Face-to-face courses are taught in the evenings during the fall, spring, or summers. A checksheet of required courses can be found here.
To enroll in any of our MAED programs, apply through the ECU Graduate School. An application is available online (go to the general ECU website at www.ecu.edu, look for prospective students, then look at graduate student application materials), or request a paper application by calling 252.328.6012. Submit the actual application, pay the application fee, submit official transcripts for all undergraduate work, write a statement of purpose, collect three letters of recommendation, supply a copy of your teaching license, and submit test scores for either the GRE or Miller Analogy Test (you can get information on either test by calling 252.328.6811). Once the application packet is complete, the ECU Graduate School analyzes the information and sends the entire packet to our department for review and consideration. This process takes a bit of time and is usually slowed down by the testing portion of the application or by the collecting of transcripts and references.
