Module Title: “The Basics of Literature Circles”
Grade: 3-8
Module Developers: Terry Atkinson, Associate Professor of Reading, East Carolina University
Michelle Roberts, Literacy Facilitator, Greene County Schools
Master Teacher Instructor: Michelle Roberts, Literacy Facilitator, Greene County Schools
Module Overview: Participants explore the components of Literature Circles, including choice of appropriate texts, role preparation, close and active reading, and personal literary response. Participants actually read a story and participate in a Literature Circle discussion via Blackboard (ECU’s online course management system). While participants gain all necessary information to implement Literature Circles with their students, actual implementation with students is not a requirement for completing this module.
Technology requirements include the ability to send and receive email with and without attachments, use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and access and navigate the Internet, and participate in an online discussion forum within Blackboard.
Participant Review of this Module:
"I started the modules "just to get my credits". It quickly turned into a very rewarding and informing experience. The reading itself was so moving that I just had to comment on it and was eager to "join the group"
discussion. I found that the "jobs" that you were assigned led to a very lively discussion and were useful in the classroom. I really enjoyed the interaction with peers and have already shared this with several others.
Great Idea! Great reading passage!"
