Module Title: "K-2 Guided Reading: From Instruction to Independence"
Grade: K-2
Module Developers: Katherine A. O’Connor, Assistant Professor of Elementary Education, East Carolina University, Martha Brown, Literacy Teacher, Orange County Schools, and Angela Howell, Classroom Teacher, Orange County Schools
Master Teacher Instructor: Angela Howell, Classroom Teacher, Orange County Schools
Module Overview: Participants learn how to effectively implement a successful guided reading program in their K-2 classrooms. For this module, participants will need access to leveled books (i.e. Rigby, Wright Group, Dominie Press). Basal readers are not intended to be used. This module teaches participants how 1) to determine placement in a guided reading group, 2) to manage guided reading groups, 3) to select appropriately leveled books for guided reading, and 4) to implement a guided reading lesson in a step-by-step manner. This module provides participants with tools to explicitly teach comprehension and word identification strategies and foster and develop reading fluency. Participants need access to 1-6 children who are on similar reading levels.
Module Pre-requisite: Participants should use running records to determine independent, instructional and frustration levels for children who will participate in the guided reading lessons planned and delivered within this module. Having an Accelerated Reader level/STAR Reader level will not provide a sufficient reading level indicator for the purposes of this module.
Technology requirements include sending and receiving e-mail with and without attachments and using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word. The participant will also need access to the Internet in order to link to and read journal articles or other relevant research.
