Module Title: Reader Response to Literature Using Newbery Award Winners

Grade: 4-8

Module Developers: Sharon de Beck; Assistant Professor of Reading, East Carolina University
Stephanie Williams; Teacher, Craven County Schools

Master Teacher and Instructor: Stephanie Williams; Teacher, Craven County Schools

Module Overview: Participants focus on Newbery Award winning texts, consider their use in upper elementary and middle school classrooms, explore the concept of reader response, and design a response-based activity. The module integrates the theory and practice of reader response with children’s literature using Rosenblatt’s Transactional Model. While participants gain all information necessary to implement reader response strategies with their students, actual implementation with students is not a requirement for completing this module.

Technology requirements include the ability to send and receive email with and without attachments, use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and access and navigate the Internet, and using Blackboard’s digital drop box (directions are provided).
