Module Title: “Math and Literacy: Integrating Language and Content in the Math Class

(Appropriate for ELL and ESL professional development)

Grade: K-12

Module Overview: Participants will explore the distinction between academic and social language. Through this distinction they learn how to identify the specific language needs of English Language Learners in the math classroom. The participants will view PowerPoint presentations and video clips and will read articles pertaining to the language and content intersection. They will also participate in online discussions to further their understanding of the content.

Technology requirements
include the ability to send and receive email with and without attachments, use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and access and navigate the Internet. All participants should download QuickTime prior to viewing the videos and be sure to have audio capability on their computers.
