The MAED in Reading Education is a 39-hour program which generally takes candidates two years to complete. The check sheets for the program, below, provides a set of core courses (12-hours) which are required for all MAED students and are all available on-line and in some cases face-to-face. There are 18 hours of courses which are specific to reading and focus on advanced competencies required for advanced licensure in this area; they include work in research in reading, diagnosis of reading difficulties, and the learning bases of reading. The remaining 9 hours of the program are open and require approval of the Graduate Director, focusing on a related area of study such as technology, content area reading, or literature.
Our courses are offered in both face-to-face mode and in on-line formats, depending on the course and the semester of offering. We are increasing our on-line offerings as the demand increases and as faculty become more interested in offering courses in that format. Face-to-face courses are taught in the evenings during the fall, spring, or summers. A checksheet of required courses can be found here.
To enroll in any of our MAED programs, apply through the ECU Graduate School. An application is available online (go to the general ECU website at www.ecu.edu, look for prospective students, then look at graduate student application materials), or request a paper application by calling 252.328.6012. Submit the actual application, pay the application fee, submit official transcripts for all undergraduate work, write a statement of purpose, collect three letters of recommendation, supply a copy of your teaching license, and submit test scores for either the GRE or Miller Analogy Test (you can get information on either test by calling 252.328.6811). Once the application packet is complete, the ECU Graduate School analyzes the information and sends the entire packet to our department for review and consideration. This process takes a bit of time and is usually slowed down by the testing portion of the application or by the collecting of transcripts and references.
