The Irene S. Howell Assistive Technology Center provides a wonderful array of learning opportunities and services in the field of assistive technology for East Carolina University students, faculty, and the eastern region of the state of North Carolina.
There for Others
In 2004, Mrs. Irene S. Howell endowed one million dollars to the College of Education to further her mission of being there for others. Her generous gift has allowed the College of Education to expand the assistive technology opportunities beyond the university campus into North Carolina schools and communities. Her gift enables the purchasing of new equipment and cutting-edge technologies in the fast-growing field of assistive technology.
Mrs. Howell is the founder of the Howell Centers located throughout North Carolina. The Howell Centers are dedicated to providing quality services and care to citizens with developmental disabilities.
Through the generosity of Mrs. Howell, the assistive technology lab has grown into a center in which one can learn and receive expert advice regarding the selection and use of assistive technology.
Mission
The Irene S. Howell Center's mission is to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities and for parents, advocates, special and general educators, school administrators, occupational therapists, school psychologists, speech therapists, recreational therapists, rehabilitation counselors, and others interested in learning about the use and benefits of assistive technology.

Wonderful information, research, and expertise in the area of assistive technology are just a few of the center's services. We offer an expanded list of services that provide meaningful learning opportunities for all those involved and are totally free. The center offers students, faculty, and the community the opportunity to learn more about assistive technology through the following:
David A. Powers Lending Library:
The David A. Powers Lending Library was established in 2006 in recognition of the dedication and service of Dr. David A. Powers in the field of assistive technology at East Carolina University. The lending library enables individuals with disabilities, families, and schools to explore and try assistive technologies in their home and school settings, thus ensuring a good fit between the end user and the technology to achieve desired outcomes.
Don Johnston Learning Center:
Don Johnston Inc. is a leader in the field of assistive technology. Don Johnston empowers educators with supplemental instruction and intervention solutions to help struggling learners build core literacy skills. Educators can explore new teaching strategies and the latest brain-based research while enhancing students' academic performance in early intervention, extended learning, RTI, Title I, special education, remediation, ESL, and adult basic education. As a Don Johnston Learning Center, we provide trainings and hands-on opportunities to explore the latest Don Johnston software.
