Dr. Susan M. Bashinski has been working in the field of Special Education for more than thirty years, teaching in public school Pre-K through high school programs, as well as at the IHE level. She has been recognized with several teaching awards. Dr. Bashinski is the author/co-author of numerous published research articles, chapters, and manuals associated with topics relevant to learners who experience low-incidence disabilities/significant support needs. She has directed numerous federal and state grants in low-incidence disabilities, including: personnel preparation, model in-service training, directed research, and field-initiated research. Dr. Bashinski is currently serving as the Site Coordinator for two OSEP Steppingstones of Technology Innovations projects: (1) an investigation regarding the ways in which receiving a cochlear implant impacts the development of young children with deaf-blindness, and the variables most highly correlated with positive outcomes; (2) evidence-based intervention practices to influence the receptive and expressive communication outcomes of cochlear implantation for children who are deaf-blind. Prior to coming to East Carolina University, Dr. Bashinski had extensive experience working with her state's alternate assessment program, writing the Extended Curriculum Standards in all core curriculum areas, and serving on the state's Advisory Committee for the Assessment of Students with Disabilities. Dr. Bashinski has extensive experience in providing professional development and technical assistance across the United States, particularly in the areas of augmentative communication and nonsymbolic communication for learners who have low-incidence disabilities, including deaf-blindness.
