Dr. Laura King's background as a special education teacher in classrooms with students who have moderate to significant disabilities shows clear connections for her current primary research areas which include a focus on best practices for the 'adapted curriculum' classroom.  Other areas of research and research interests include teaching emergent language on AAC systems, successful integration of assistive technology with curriculum to enhance student learning, effective use of paraprofessionals within AC settings, disability in higher education/special education, action research, and distance education. Dr. King has presented nationally on special education topics in relation to these areas. In addition, she is currently beginning research exploring these areas as they align with rural school districts, specifically in eastern North Carolina.
