Dr. Vivian Mott
Professor

Department Chair

Vivian W. Mott, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Counselor and Adult Education, is a Cyril O. Houle Research Scholar, Salzburg Fellow, and recent recipient of the Grumman Award from the North Carolina Adult Education Association.  Dr. Mott’s research interests focus on the development of professional expertise, reflective practice, multicultural issues, and ethics in education and business. She is co-editor of two books, Organization & Administration of Adult/Continuing Education, Charting a Course for Continuing Professional Education, and author of numerous book chapters. Her work has been published in Adult Education Quarterly, Continuing Studies in Education, Journal of Transformative Education, and the New Directions on Adult and Continuing Education series.

Dr. Elizabeth S. Knott
Associate Professor

Elizabeth Knott, Ed. D has 23 years of teaching at ECU, Dr. Knott has taught almost every course in the adult education curriculum, a number of which she originally developed as well. In addition, she has working individually with a large number of students on theses, internships, directed readings, and independent study. Dr. Knott has given numerous scholarly presentations at the local and state levels, published in peer reviewed journals and conferences proceedings, written instructional materials for practitioners, written and consulted on grants, and provided much consultation at the state and local levels aimed at improving the practice of adult education. Her areas of current interest include adult literacy, oral histories of older adults and lifespan learning histories, early 20th century teacher preparation programs and the students’ experiences in them, and case study research

Dr. Steven W. Schmidt
Program Coordinator

Dr. Steven Schmidt’s primary research areas are online teaching and learning, development and use of surveys as measurement tools, workplace training and development, and cultural competence. He has published articles in several journals, including Human Resource Development Quarterly, New Horizons in Adult Education, and Human Resource Development.  He is active in numerous education and human resource associations and has presented internationally in Quebec and Nova Scotia.
