Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership-Higher Education Administration Concentration

The College of Education at East Carolina University offers an EdD in Educational Leadership with a concentration in higher education administration. It is designed to prepare individuals to assume positions as educational leaders in higher education. Admission to the program (degree code 360) is based on the assumption that candidates will be able to complete the requirements of the program and become successful educational leaders.
This degree does not lead to licensure. Individuals interested in licensure for public schools should investigate the public school administration K-12 program offered by the Department of Educational Leadership.
Course Components
A 60-semester hour Program of Study beyond the master's degree is the minimum requirement.
Course work is distributed as follows:
- Educational Leadership - 24 semester hours of required and elective courses in educational leadership
- Minor - 12 semester hours in a related area of study
- Research - 12 semester hours in quantitative and qualitative research
- Internship - 6 semester hours of field-based action research over two semesters
- Dissertation - 6 semester hours successful completion of a research-based dissertation under the supervision of a faculty committee

Examinations
The student must pass four examinations: a 12 semester hour review; a 40 semester hour review; a dissertation proposal/prospectus; and a defense of the dissertation.
Time Restrictions
A student has six years in which to complete all requirements for the degree. Most students will be expected to complete the program in less than that time.
Additional Admission Requirement
Completion of a master's degree. (Some educational leadership experience is preferred). If the degree is in a field other than educational leadership, prerequisite courses may be prescribed.
Applicants who meet minimum admission requirements will also be requested to complete an impromptu writing sample and interview with the faculty in the department. Those eligible candidates will be contacted within a few weeks after the March 15 deadline.
