Snow Falling on Speight

The College of Education at East Carolina University would like to thank you for your service as an education professional and/or advocate. An inspirational story just came out about one of our fall 2013 elementary education graduates, Felicia Bucker, who demonstrates the relentless perseverance and passion of a true Pirate educator.

There are so many wonderful things happening with the College of Education. I have highlighted some of our accomplishments this past year.

  • Our College is one of only 24 programs nationwide that have received approval to move forward with a research-to-practice approach to accreditation (called the Transformation Initiative).
  • East Carolina’s COE is a national leader in recruiting and preparing teachers who are successful in North Carolina’s rural communities, a critical need. We recently received a $2.28 million gift from State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation to sustain and strengthen those efforts.
  • The COE pioneered Stanford University’s edTPA student teacher measurement instrument in North Carolina along with UNC Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem State University. The COE is a partner in the first national study that uses data from edTPA to predict the teaching graduates who are likely to produce higher scores in the classroom.
  • We have created a statewide model program for co-teaching, an innovative and highly rated model of student teaching that places either one student teacher or two student teachers with one mentor stressing team planning, instruction and assessment.

For more exciting news about the College, we would like to share the latest editions of News and Notes with you: September 2013 and December 2013. We also encourage you to find us on Facebook: ECU College of Education.

The entire university is thankful for the many dedicated alumni and individuals such as yourselves who contribute time, talent, and treasure to this great institution. We invite you to view the Chancellor’s Holiday Greeting: Your involvement and support mean so much to the College’s students, faculty and staff! We hope you continue to stay connected to the College and University.

As 2013 comes to a close, we hope you consider supporting dedicated students like Felicia by making a tax deductible gift by December 31. To make a contribution, please contact Jessica Nottingham, the Director of Development, at 252-737-1257 or, or you may donate online at this link: Jessica is able to assist you with any questions regarding gift designations and the various avenues of making your donation. Please know that every dollar makes an impact!

We wish you the happiest of holidays!
