Supervision

Upon arrival, students will be assigned to a small “home-team”. Students will be supervised 24 hours a day. Along with the University Police, additional security staff will be employed to assist in providing security.

All students must be in their assigned home teams at ALL Scheduled check-ins. After each day's activities, students will proceed to evening meals with their counselors. There will be planned evening activities for ALL students. Students must report to their home team prior to and following evening activities and must be in their group to observe the 9:45 p.m. curfew. Counselors will be on duty to conduct check-ins, participate in evening activities, and enforce the curfew. Failure to observe curfew can result in immediate dismissal from the program. Students are not allowed to leave the residence hall unless they are accompanied by a counselor or faculty member.

Once students have arrived and registered at the Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development, the Director and staff have certain legal responsibilities regarding the students. In order to ensure that these responsibilities are met, it is important that if a student decides to withdraw from the program after checking in, their parents must contact the Director by telephone to make the necessary arrangements before travel arrangements are made to pick up the student.

Males and females will be housed on different floors of the residence hall and visitation between males and females on the residence hall floors will not be allowed for any reason. Students will be permitted to visit in the main lobby.

Cost

All expenses, except the transportation to and from the program site and miscellaneous spending money, will be paid for with funds provided by the North Carolina General Assembly. Parents will be responsible for providing documentation of a recent health examination by a licensed physician.

In case of illness, injury or other emergency, students must notify a counselor or faculty person immediately. Should a resident become ill or injured during his or her stay, the ECU Student Health Services and/or Pitt County Memorial Hospital (PCMH) will provide health care. Students on medication of any kind are required to provide this information on their health form. Students are not allowed to keep prescribed medication in their rooms without approval of the Parents and the Director. Should a resident require medical attention from ECU Student Health Services or PCMH, the parents will be notified by telephone. Student medical forms will be kept in the Legislators’ School office and in the counselor's office of the residence hall for quick reference. Each counselor will review his/her group's medical forms to take note of any special needs or allergies. All medical information will be considered confidential and will be available only to staff or medical personnel as necessary. If a student is ill and unable to participate in scheduled activities for more than 24 hours, the parents/guardians will be contacted to take the student home.

All expenses incurred as a result of service(s) by a medical institution for any illness or injury are the responsibility of the student's parent/guardian.
