A selection committee is formulated in each school. This committee consists of various schools and community groups and receives recommendations from principals, teachers, and counselors. The committee then nominates a total of two students– preferably one boy and one girl.

Nominations must be sent to the Legislators' School office and be postmarked no later than February 15, 2008. Forms submitted after the due date, or forms with more than two nominations will not be considered for admittance to this program. A random process will be used to select approximately one hundred and fifty students for each session. Selected students will be notified by March 10, 2008.

Who is eligible to attend the program?
Students who will be entering grades eighth through eleventh for the academic year 2008-2009 may be nominated by teachers, counselors, and principals. Students served in the academically gifted program are not eligible to attend. Students who have attended in the past are also not eligible.

What are the requirements for nomination?
Several characteristics of potential leaders should be identified in the student. No one student is expected to possess all of these qualities. The Legislators' School is designed to enhance these qualities. Please consider the following characteristics in nominating students:

Personal attributes: The student is enthusiastic, inquisitive, creative, independent, emotionally mature, dependable, and self motivated.

Interpersonal skills: The student communicates well, is cooperative, and is able to display concern for others.

Responsible citizenship: The student shows respect for the rights of others and commands respect from others. Coping skills: The student is able to adapt to changing situations, to give and accept constructive criticism, and to learn from mistakes.

Accomplishments: The student shows school leadership, community involvement, or special talents. Although academic performance is not a requirement for eligibility, students should be able to participate in higher level thinking and questioning activities.

How are students nominated?
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Students are nominated by teachers, counselors, and principals. Form a selection committee that represents various schools and community groups.

2. Advertise the program within your school and solicit nominations from teachers, counselors and principals.

3. Select the appropriate number of students who will be entering grades eighth through eleventh during the 2008-2009 school year.

4. Send in the Recommendation Form and the Nomination Form for each student selected by your school and have it post marked by February 15, 2008. Late nominations will not be considered.
