“You gain strength, experience and confidence by every experience where you really stop to look fear in the face… You must do the thing you cannot do.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

undefinedThe development of leadership among rural youth is well recognized as a primary need if rural areas are to survive and prosper. The Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development effectively addresses this need in North Carolina and serves as a model for other states to follow.
Throughout the program the major emphasis is to expose students to the Seven Habits of effective leadership and to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable to try new experiences, develop interpersonal skills and enhance their self-esteems. An indication that the program is effective is best revealed through such comments as the following:

" When I returned to my school, my principal asked me to chair a committee concerning school attendance. I could not have handled it as I did without my experience at Legislators' School. (Student)

" The program is great. I sent you a very shy young lady. She returned much more outgoing and confident. (Parent)

" Thanks to programs like this, young people who would not have opportunities have the chance to grow and learn in a positive and challenging environment. (Counselor)
