Undergraduate Program Goals

The teacher education program in reading will develop candidates'
  • understanding of the various components of the reading process
  • understanding of reading curriculum
  • understanding of developmental reading, including various instructional methods associated with reading instruction
  • understanding the components of a balanced reading program that integrates all communication skills
  • ability to use a variety of assessment measures including appropriate diagnostic and remedial procedures in a clinical or field-based setting
  • understanding of patterns of organizing and supervising reading programs
  • abilities to teach with multiple approaches to reading instruction including integration of the reading-writing processes
  • skills in using recent research data in assessment and planning for reading instruction
  • understanding of issues, trends, and research in reading
