Welcome to the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology in the College of Education at East Carolina University.

The Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology offers three totally online, Internet-based master’s degree programs, including the Master of Library Science (MLS), the Master of Arts in Education in Instructional Technology (MAEd in IT), and the Master of Science in Instructional Technology (MS in IT), and four master’s level certificate programs.  LSIT also offers a post-master’s degree Certificate of Advanced Study.  These programs prepare students for careers in school libraries as media specialists and supervisors and technology facilitators, as librarians in a variety of positions in public and academic libraries, and as instructional technologists in community colleges, government agencies, military bases, and industry. 

Mission

The mission of the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology, in keeping with the purpose of the University, is to provide programs of library and instructional technology education which emphasize scholarship, research, and service, and which prepare students for positions of leadership.

Goals

The goals of the Department contribute to the attainment of both the University purpose and the Departmental mission by

  1. offering quality education which
  1. incorporates the principles of librarianship and instructional technology
  2. prepares students for positions as professionals who can meet the changing informational, education, cultural, and recreational needs of individuals and society, and
  3. serves as a focal point in the University for the study and understanding of information access and instructional technology issues;
  1. contributing to librarianship and instructional technology through research, publication, and involvement in professional organizations; and
  2. serving professionals through programs of continuing education for practicing librarians, instructional technologists, and other related professionals.

Recruitment Policy

Consistent with its own mission as well as that of  East Carolina University and the College of Education , The Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology seeks well-qualified, well-rounded, and motivated individuals who are committed to serving their local communities through their professional activities. The department especially strives to recruit individuals from diverse backgrounds as well as those from geographic areas requiring librarians and allied professionals so that they can return to meet local needs.
