SCIE 5000. Contemporary Approaches to Teaching Biological Science (3) Prerequisites: BIOL 1100, 1101, 1200, 1201; or equivalent; a minimum of 16 s.h. of biology. An introduction to effective teaching in biology using the current curricula materials. Emphasis will be on the investigative nature of biology.
SCIE 5010. Applications of Microcomputers in Teaching Physical Science (3) Two one-hour lectures and one two-hour laboratory per week. An introduction to the use of the microcomputer to assist in teaching physical science. Topics will include operation of the microcomputer, review and evaluation of available software, and computer techniques to illustrate physical science concepts.

SCIE 6000. Science and Society (3) Selected topics from the development of science to demonstrate the social, historical, and philosophical aspects of science. Emphasis on the science-society interaction.
SCIE 6003. Selected Topics in Life Science for Middle Grades Teachers (3) A study of selected topics in life sciences suitable for use in the middle school.
SCIE 6004. Selected Topics in Physical Science for Middle Grades Teachers (3) A study of selected topics in the physical sciences suitable for use in the middle school.
SCIE 6006. Chemistry for Middle Grades Teachers (3) Prerequisite: At least one year teaching experience in grades 6-9 or consent of instructor. Content and instructional methods for chemistry for grades 6-9 teachers with emphasis on demonstrations and hands-on activities.
SCIE 6010. The History and Philosophy of Science (3) Deals with the development of scientific ideas, their origin, growth, and relationship to the present.
SCIE 6019. Science in Elementary Education (3) Prerequisite: A Class A Teaching Certificate in elementary or special education. Current trends and issues in elementary school science teaching and learning with emphasis on contemporary literature and classroom implementation.
SCIE 6020. Recent Developments in Science Teaching (3) A study of new or experimental curricula in science. Includes the historical development of these new programs as well as the present status and future plans.
SCIE 6050. Developmental Approaches to Science Teaching (2) Prerequisites: NC teaching certificate or equivalent; formal acceptance into a DASH summer institute. The Developmental Approaches in Science and Health (DASH) program is an interdisciplinary science curriculum designed for grades K-2. Methodology and content are the focus of each training session. Follow-up sessions are required.
SCIE 6081. Astronomy Methods for Teachers (2) Prerequisites: PHYS 1080, 1081; or two years teaching of an astronomy unit in school; PHYS 1050 or PHYS 1250. An introductory course to prepare teachers in the methods of teaching astronomy using activities, experiments, observations, and library/computer resources.
SCIE 6200. Environmental Education (3) Prerequisites: Class A teaching certificate; experience teaching science; or consent of instructor. A critical examination of the issues arising from interaction with the natural environment. The course will focus on such themes as the history of environmental decay, environmental ethics and values, major world environmental issues and problems, pollution, and our responsibilities to future generations.
SCIE 6310. Advanced Methods in Teaching Science (3) Prerequisites: Class A teaching certificate; experience teaching science; or consent of instructor. A comparative study of cooperative, individualized, and competitive goal structures in science teaching. Cooperative problem solving and critical thinking skills will be emphasized and applied in examining global science issues and in developing a scientific world view.
SCIE 6420. Marine Education (3) Prerequisite: A Class A Teaching Certificate in elementary, middle, or secondary education or consent of instructor. A study of the current status of marine education, with emphasis on student involvement and development of classroom instruction materials.
SCIE 6500. Research in Science Education (3) A study of research as a tool of the science educator. Topics such as research methods, problems of research, design, measurements in research, statistical methods of research, data processing, decision making, scientific report writing, and the evaluation of research will be studied.
SCIE 6501. Experimental Evaluation in Science (3) Deals with experimental design, evaluation, and research methods as related to classroom and laboratory teaching as well as the coordination of the various sciences.
SCIE 6505. Problems in Science Education (Elementary) (3) Designed to provide opportunities for individuals to work on research in science teaching at the elementary school level.
SCIE 6506. Problems in Science Education (Secondary) (3) Designed to provide opportunities for individuals to work on research in science teaching at the middle and senior high school level.
SCIE 6507. Problems in Science Education (College) (3) Designed to provide opportunities for individuals to work on research in science teaching at the college level.
SCIE 6522. Readings in Science Education (1) Designed to provide the student an opportunity to meet with the instructor of his or her choice and to cooperatively decide on special reading topics to improve the background of the student. Reading topics may be selected from sources appropriate to any level of science teaching.
SCIE 6525. Selected Topics in Biological Science for Elementary Teachers (3) Selected topics in biological sciences suitable for use in the elementary school.
SCIE 6530. Selected Topics in Physical Science for Elementary Teachers (3) Selected topics in the physical sciences suitable for use in the elementary school.
