MAEd in Elementary Mathematics Education

The Masters of Arts in Education (MAEd) with a concentration in Elementary Mathematics is a practitioner-oriented online program designed to sharpen instructional expertise, develop skill in research, deepen mathematics knowledge, and promote leadership in mathematics education.  The courses in the Graduate Certificate in Elementary Mathematics Education are a subset of this MAEd.

Program Details

Admission to the Graduate School includes 

  • an application,
  • official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended,
  • a copy of your teaching license,
  • two letters of recommendation from someone aware of your potential as a graduate student.
  • Applicants must have an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (from an accredited college/university) and a Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogy Test at or above the 30th percentile. (Exception: 10 years of teaching exempts applicants from the testing requirement.)

  • Mathematics at Licensure Area (12 hours)

Capstone Project

You are almost finished with your MAEd in Mathematics Education! There are a number of important processes, however, that must take place in addition to successfully completing your course work. Within the first two weeks of the semester in which you intend to graduate, you should apply for graduation, using the form and instructions found below. Then there is a graduate summary that must be completed – work on that with your faculty advisor and finish that by or before mid-semester. Finally, you will want to apply to have your license updated. Complete this paperwork near the end of the semester in which you are graduating.

  • Go to Licensure, read the instructions, and download the appropriate forms.
    Alternately, we have the forms referenced below in the “Resources and Forms” section of the website. Be sure to note that forms could be out-of-date in the “Resources and Forms” section, although we try to stay current.
Are all of the courses in the program online?
  • Yes. Most of our students are busy professionals who are part-time graduate students. The online nature allows them to complete the program from remote sites. At least six of the courses provide a blend of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The six courses that comprise the Graduate Certificate in Elementary Mathematics build community and support certain learning experiences through live online sessions every other Wednesday from 5:00-7:45. Other courses are offered through an asynchronous mode of instruction.
How much does a course cost? How much does it cost to complete the program?
  • As of summer 2013, a distance education course – the general category in which our courses reside – costs $636 for in-state students. This includes tuition and fees, but not book cost. One of the outstanding benefits of online education is the savings in transportation cost. At the current rate, a 36-hour master’s degree costs $7632. What is the typical course load for a student in the program?
  • Many of our graduate students take two courses (six credit hours) each fall, spring and summer semester, but some take one course and a few take three.
How long does it take to complete the program?
  • Students wishing to complete the program in two years usually take two courses each fall, spring and summer. Students wishing to complete the program in three years usually take one course each spring and fall and two courses each summer.
Am I allowed to transfer classes that I have already taken?
  • Students may transfer up to two classes (six credit hours), if the program area faculty and Graduate School agree on the courses. Some transfer classes are very good matches for required courses, but the most common use of transfer classes is for elective hours.
I have heard of a test waiver for professional graduate programs. Do I qualify?
  • We recommend two primary types of waivers that the Graduate School typically approves: (1) professional waiver for those whose undergraduate degree is 10 or more years old and the candidate has relevant professional experience in the meantime and (2) waiver for those who already have a master’s degree.
