newspaperOn Tuesday, October 7, 2008 the Office of Professional Development and Student Outreach in the College of Education at East Carolina University will host AVID DAY 2008 in Mendenhall Student Center. AVID (Advancing Via Individual Determination) goals are to motivate and prepare underachieving students to attend college.This is the second AVID DAY hosted by the College of Education. There will be more than 275, 9th-12th graders from nine different public schools in eastern North Carolina participating.  more...
newspaperEast Carolina University’s College of Education will conduct the Annual Educators Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on October 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Fletcher Recital Hall.  The ceremony will be followed by a reception for inductees and their guests for the viewing of their plaques displayed on the Educators Hall of Fame wall located in the Speight Building.  The Educators Hall of Fame recognizes the service of those whom East Carolina alumni and friends are most grateful.  This permanent recognition was inaugurated in the fall of 1999, and is displayed prominently in the Speight Building on the ECU campus.  more...

Over several decades, East Carolina University (ECU) coastal geologists, led by Dr. Stanley Riggs, have amassed ample evidence that dynamic processes formed and continue to alter North Carolina’s Outer Banks—however inconvenient those changes might be for residents and visitors. That’s one lesson learned by a team of educators and students who explored the barrier islands with Riggs in an effort to develop educational resources for North Carolina schools.  Riggs stated, “Change is the only constant within the coastal system and happens at much faster rates than changes occurring on more stable inland terrains. If we recognize the inevitability of change, we can adjust our human activities to accommodate it. By educating students now, we hope to create citizens who will make smart science-based decisionsabout our use of the islands.” more...

Greenville, NC – On May 17, 2008, East Carolina University’s North Carolina-Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College students joined several hundred students in Raleigh, NC to race alternative-fuel vehicles they constructed for the 13th Annual Electric Vehicle challenge. The event, sponsored by the nonprofit organization SMARTT Challenge (Students Making Advancements in Renewable Transportation Technology), was held at the McKimmon Center.  The day was intended to educate both the students and other citizens about the environmental benefits of using alternative-fuel technologies. more...

Dr. Louis Warren is this year’s recipient of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest teaching award given at the university. During a recognition luncheon to be held at the UNC Board of Governors’ May 9 meeting, Warren and the other 16 UNC-system award honorees will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 prize.  Warren was awarded the Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award in 2006.  In 1998, Warren was the first recipient of the Max Ray Joyner award for faculty service through continuing education. more...

Greenville, NC - Eleven faculty members in the in ECU’s Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology (LSIT), known as the LSIT Podcast Research Group, received the 2008 NCDLA Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching award.  This North Carolina Distance Learning Association (NCDLA) Award Committee . recognized their outstanding accomplishments in the field of distance learning. newspaperGreenville, NC - Department of Curriculum and Instruction Assistant Professor Dr. Elizabeth Swaggerty and Graduate Assistant, Kelley Bunn, are working to promote poetry in local elementary schools during April, which is National Poetry Month. Teachers and students in grades three through five at Elmhurst Elementary School and South Greenville Elementary School are reading and voting for their favorite poems that will be selected for the second edition of A Jar of Tiny Stars, edited by Deborah Wooten and Bernice Cullinan. Student ballots will be collected, tallied, and submitted to the editor to be added to other student votes from across the nation for the final selection of poems. Greenville, NC - The Library Science Program at East Carolina University announces the recent recipients of the Community Oriented Librarian Recruitment Scholarships (COLRS) for the spring and fall 2008 semesters. The COLRS Program scholarships provide a full tuition scholarship, valued at approximately $15,000 per student per degree on a competitive basis, for East Carolina University’s Masters in Library Science, an all-online degree program that allows students to study, work, and earn their degree while at living in their own communities. The Library Science program began awarding full tuition scholarships to students preparing to become school library media specialists in late 2006 through a competitive review process. Approximately thirty-one of the forty-five COLRS Program scholarships have now been awarded to date. This year’s scholarships total approximately $300,000 to support students entering the Library Science Program. more...

Greenville, NC - Augmentative Communication, sometimes referred to as alternative communication (AAC) is a method of communication used by individuals with severe speech and language disabilities.  This type of communication provides an opportunity for individuals with disabilities or speech impairments to speak out, share ideas and participate in life activities at home, school or in the community.  Augmentative communication devices come in all shapes and sizes. They provide a means for interactivity and a quality of life. In the past year, ECU’s College of Education has worked with the US Army Training & Doctrine Command on a proposal to support the training of United States Army educational interns. Starting with the fall semester the US Army Training & Doctrine Command entered into a partnership with the College of Education to offer graduate level classes through distance education (DE) for educational interns in the US Army.  Two departments in the College of Education, The Department of Counselor and Adult Education and The Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology, will be offering courses online each semester.  more...

Greenville, NC – In May, the New Teacher Center Induction Grant Team attended the New Teacher Center (NTC) Teacher Induction Professional Development Trainings, a partnership grant, funded by the Carnegie Corporation. ECU was one of seven teams that attended the institute in New Jersey.   ECU’s New Teacher Center Induction Grant Team received training in Instructional Mentoring based on the University of California-Santa Cruz model. Hiroshima, Japan – Two College of Education Elementary Education faculty, Dr. Carolyn Ledford and Dr. Betty Peel, and local Pitt County teacher, Mrs. Pam Justasen, recently returned from a week long trip to Hiroshima University.  Dr. Carolyn Ledford has been traveling to Japan since 1999 along with ECU faculty, students, and Pitt County teachers.  The visit to Japan is part of the accord established last year among three University Consortium in Japan (Osaka Kyoiku University,Hiroshima University, and Naruto Kyoiku University) and three University Consortium in the United States (East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Western Carolina University). more...

Edenton, NC - James Bell, an eighth grade English teacher at Chowan Middle School, Edenton-Chowan Public Schools, was named the 2007-08 North Carolina Teacher of the Year.  Bell received his teaching certificate from ECU.   State Superintendent June Atkinson presented him with the award at a formal banquet held in Cary in early May.  Atkinson said, "James has demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching and a strong dedication to the success of his students. He is a true representative of the many outstanding teachers from across the states that have the power and the ability to deliver strong instruction but also to inspire others to be their best." more...

Dubai –Dr. Carolyn Ledford, Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction; Dr. Sandra Warren, Interim Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction; and Dr. Vivian Martin Covington, Director of Teacher Education recently returned from the School Reform Conference hosted by United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) University’s College of Education.  Drs. Ledford, Warren and Covington were invited by  Abdullateef Haidar, Dean of the College of Education at U.A.E. University, to present the paper Preparing Preservice Teachers to Teach in a Global Society during a session on Teachers and School Reform.  The Conference, held in Dubai, drew in prominent scholars to provide suggestions and recommendations for future actions.  more...

Greenville, NC - The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at East Carolina University is pleased to announce the New Teacher Support Network (NTSN).  NTSN is an innovative website designed to offer support and resources for initially licensed teachers in the Latham Clinical Schools Network. The Latham Clinical Schools Network is a partnership between East Carolina University and 26 school districts in eastern North Carolina.  The school systems include: Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Edgecombe, Greene, Halifax, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash/Rocky Mount, Onslow, Pamlico, Pitt, Wayne and Wilson. Greenville, NC – Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, steps down as dean after serving nearly ten years in ECU’s College of Education.  A year ago,Chancellor Steve Ballard asked Sheerer to step in as interim vice chancellor for advancement while the university conducted a search.   During that year, Sheerer also continued her role as dean for the College of Education.  After a successful year of juggling both positions, Chancellor Ballard approached her a second time. This time Sheerer was asked to serve as interim vice chancellor for student life. Sheerer said after the second request, she felt like she needed to turn in her resignation allowing the search for a new dean to begin.  Chancellor Ballard said, “She brings to this new position outstanding talent, leadership, energy and an unerring ability to do what is best for East Carolina.more...

newspaper1Greenville, NC - The Michael Bunting Award was presented to three students during  East Carolina University’s College of Education Scholarship Award Ceremony on March 30, 2006.  The award supports students who have transitioned from a partnering community college to participate in Wachovia Partnership East (WPE).  WPE makes it possible for students to remain at home and complete a four-year degree in Elementary Education, or Special Education. Students begin at their local community colleges for the first half of the program and continue through ECU at one of three hub sites (Craven Community College, Wayne Community College and Nash Community College) to complete the second half.  The course work from ECU is delivered in the evening and online in a part-time format that works well for many working adults who are interested in becoming teachers.  more...

Greenville, NC – ECU’s Eta Chi Chapter received a Reading is Fun (RIF) Grant from Kappa Delta Pi this year. A partnership was developed with a 3rd and 4th grade class at Bethel School in Pitt County to create science content books.  College of Education faculty, Dr. Linda James, Assistant Professor in Science Education; Ryan Eash, Instructional Technology Consultant at the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education; and Dr. Carol Brown, Assistant Professor, in the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology and Eta Chi Chapter Counselor, recently concluded the grant project.  "All of the students were fully engaged in this project and did a wonderful job constructing their science content pages for the book.  It was a great culminating project to reinforce the subject matter learned in science throughout the school year."  said Eash. more...
