newspaper1Greenville, NC -- ECU Project HEART tutors and elementary students at Bundy Elementary School in Farmville were heartbroken over the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and wanted to help the relief efforts. ECU’s Project HEART tutors took a leadership role in organizing a school-wide “jar wars” to raise money for the victims. Working together, Project HEART tutors, students, teachers, parents, administrators raised over $2,500. more...
undefinedCraven County, NC – A Graduate Recognition Celebration honoring Wachovia Partnership East’s (WPE) first graduating class will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at Craven Community College.  Sixteen students who began their educational careers by completing their general education requirements in the WPE Coastal Consortium are graduating with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.  Six of the sixteen candidates are already employed in the public schools as Teacher Assistants. more...

Greenville, NC- Last holiday season the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology (LSIT) decided to share goodwill and good books with the needy in our community. Each member of the department purchased at least one new book for the small library in the Greenville Community Shelter. Books were selected with the hope that those in need might have something to read that was both encouraging and comforting during the holidays.  Most of the books were for the children or youth who might be in need of services from the shelter. more...


undefinedChicago, IL. – East Carolina University’s College of Education has been invited by The Carnegie Corporation of New York to participate in the Learning Network for The Teachers for a New Era (TNE) grantees program.  Andrew Carnegie established Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding."  A three-person team from ECU will attend a Learning Network meeting in Chicago, IL. November 14-15, 2005.  ECU team members are Dr. James Smith, Provost; Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, Dean of the College of Education; and Dr. Alan White, Dean of Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.  more...

undefinedOctober 7, 2005 -- Greenville, NC – An induction ceremony into the Educators’ Hall of Fame will be held October 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in Fletcher Hall.  The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the Speight Building on the East Carolina University campus.  The Educators’ Hall of Fame recognizes and highlights the service of those whom East Carolina alumni and friends are most grateful.  This permanent recognition was inaugurated in the fall of 1999, and is displayed prominently in the Speight Building. more...

Mr. John Dornan, Director of the North Carolina Public School Forum, willpresent on “The Leandro Ruling: Possible Implications of the North Carolina Lottery on Implementation” on October 19 at 3:00-4:00 pm in the Great Room at Mendenhall Student Center.  Mr. Dornan will present the same topic again at the monthly meeting of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional organization for public school educators, at Brook Valley Country Club from 6:00-8:00 pm.  There is no cost for admission to the Mendenhall session.  To attend the Phi Delta Kappa presentation, there is a $16 charge which covers dinner and gratuity. more...

Siegel, Associate Professor in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership, confirmed that the College of Education has been awarded a grant in the amount of $85,000 to be paid over 12 months by Lumina Foundation for Education. Lumina Foundation for education is an Indianapolis-based, private foundation dedicated to expanding access and success in education beyond high school.  Siegel, who applied for the grant, is the study’s principal investigator.  The college will begin receiving grant funds from Lumina in early October. more...

New Bern, NC -  The 2005 North Carolina Adult Education Association (NCAEA) Annual Conference will be held at the Sheraton New Bern Hotel and Marina in New Bern, NC October 9–11, 2005.  This year’s theme is Educational Enhancement for Lifetime Advancement: Preparing the Workforce to Meet the Challenges of the Changing Workplace.  Many adult education students and faculty from the College of Education plan to attend. Three teachers from Lenoir County Schools are participating in the interactive pre-service video-conference project from the end of September through the first week of October.  The College of Education appreciates the teachers and districts willing to open up their classrooms to allow ECU pre-service teachers to observe them teaching lessons in real time. more...
