College of Education Inducts New Members into the Educators’ Hall of Fame

Greenville, NC – An induction ceremony into the Educators’ Hall of Fame will be held October 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in Fletcher Hall.  The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the Speight Building on the East Carolina University campus.  The Educators’ Hall of Fame recognizes and highlights the service of those whom East Carolina alumni and friends are most grateful.  This permanent recognition was inaugurated in the fall of 1999, and is displayed prominently in the Speight Building.

This year’s speaker is Wendy Miller, 2005-06 North Carolina Teacher of the Year, and graduate of ECU’s College of Education.  Miller is a K-2 elementary teacher at James W. Smith Elementary School in Craven County. She is a self described risk taker.  Miller enjoys taking her students back in time by decorating her room with a theme.  One of her most recent classroom creations involved dinosaurs, an active volcano, lagoon with live fish and a water fall.  “Everyday should be an adventure…students should be as excited to come to school as they were the first day of kindergarten.” says Miller.

Miller received her graduate degree from the College of Education last May.  She says the college played a big role in helping her achieve her goal of earning her MAEd.  The college met her needs as a mother of two with a full-time job; this in turn made her a stronger teacher which is reflective in her practice.

Among this year’s Educators’ Hall of Fame inductees is, President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of North Carolina, Molly Corbett Broad.  Broad executes the policies of the University and represents the UNC system to the North Carolina General Assembly, state officials, the federal government, and other key University constituencies. Prior to joining UNC, Broad served as executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer in the California State University system, chief executive officer for the Arizona University System and served on professional and civic organizations. She was the president of the International Council for Distance Education. And has written and spoken on strategic planning for higher education and emerging technologies.

Members inducted into the Educators’ Hall of Fame are university professors, teachers, counselors, school board members, or other persons whose service made an impact in the lives of those recognizing them through a donation gift.   All gifts received go to the Hall of Fame Scholarship endowment. Annual interest from the $1 million endowment will fund merit-based scholarships for College of Education students. This prestigious merit scholarship program attracts more of the best and brightest students to the East Carolina University College of Education.
