Dr. Katie O’Connor, Dr. Terry Atkinson, and Dr. Sue Steinweg (as a team) and Dr. Tara Jeffs (as a team member with Dr. Leonard Trujillo from the Department of Occupational Therapy) have won awards for their presentations at the ECU 2006 Think-In Best Practices Conference.  These awards (accompanied by $2,000 that may be used for supplies, equipment, or travel) represent university-level recognition of the innovative work these faculty are doing with technology.

November 2, 2006: Presented a paper “Discussion boards: An Inquiry Community.” during the National Association of Professors of Middle Level Education Best Practices Forum at the 32nd Annual National Middle School Association Conference in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Johna Faulconer was also recently appointed to serve as State Coordinator of the Promising Young Writers Program for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  The Promising Young Writers Program is an NCTE-sponsored competition designed to honor eighth-grade students in the United States, Canada, and American schools abroad for excellence in writing. The State Coordinator directs the work of the teams of state judges.

November 2006: Dr. Larry Nash White was selected to serve as the Program Coordinator for the Library Science program beginning in January 2007. Dr. White will coordinate the program’s efforts in curriculum restructuring and development, public relations, and planning.

November 2006: Graduated from the BRIDGESLeadership Academy. Bridges is an intensive professional development program for women in higher education. It is designed to help women identify, understand, and move into leadership roles in the academy.

Invited to The Second Annual School Library Journal Leadership Summit “Learning in the 21st Century: The Role of the Library Media Program” Chicago, IL
The summit brought together leaders in the field ofeducation and, especially, school library media, to focus on the future role of the school library media program. This summit will look specifically at the rapid changes occurring in education brought about by technology, the impact of these changes on learners and educators in the 21st century, and the changing role of the school media specialist in this new landscape.

November 9, 2006: Presentation at the North Carolina Science Teachers Professional Development Institute: Customized Online Courses for K-12 Teachers

Dr. Vivian W. Mott, Chair
Department of Counselor & Adult Education Department

Dr. Mott recently successfully completed the inaugural class of the Pitt County Citizens Academy sponsored by the Pitt County Government. She and 20 participants of the academy were honored on Monday, November 20, 2006 during the Pitt County Commissioners meeting. The purpose of the Academy was to familiarize citizens to the functions of county government. During the 8-week sessions, participants met with County Commissioners, toured county offices and facilities such as the Solid Waste Center, ECVC Recycling, Detention Center, and Parks and Recreation, and heard presentations on economic development, social services, planning, and emergency management. Dr. Mott serves on the Pitt County Women’s Commission.

Karen S. Voytecki, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

On November 8, 2006, Dr. Voytecki was appointed as the Executive Director of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

On November 10, 2006, Dr. Voytecki made a Presentation at the Teacher Education Division / Technology and Media Division  (TED/TAM) Conference of CEC in San Diego, CA – Zambone, Alana, Engleman, Melissa, & Voytecki, Karen “Preparing pre-service teachers of different ages and experiences: Meeting their unique needs effectively”

On November 11, 2006, Dr.Voytecki made a presentation at TED/TAM in San Diego, CA – Voytecki, Karen, & Heller, H. William “Institute for Exceptionality”
