Dr. Jamin Carson, Assistant Professor 
in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in Middle Grades Education

Dr. Carson recently published an article in The Education Forum titled “Quantum Mechanics, Religion, and Objective Reality: A Response to Edmund Meltzer’s Question. The article is part of an ongoing debate between advocates of two opposing educational philosophies: constructivism and objectivism,” said Carson.        

  

Dr. Michael Bosse, Mathematics Ed. Associate Professor 
in the Department of Math and Science Education

Dr. Bosse has published several articles in the past year including: Infinite Sums in Geometry: Inducing Two Sets of Patterns in “Mathematics Teachers,” Mathematically Talented Children: How Can Parents Help? in “Gifted Child Today,”and Mimicking Proximity: The Role of Distance Education in Forming Communities of Learning in the “International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning,” to name a few.

 

Dr. Steven Schmidt, Assistant Professor in the
Department of Counselor and Adult Education
 
Dr. Schmidt has published an article in the online journal, New Horizons in Adult Education & Human Resource Development called “An Instrument Development Model for Online Surveys in Human Resource Development and Adult Education.”  The article describes the use of a schematic model for developing and distributing online surveys.

 

Dr. James McKernan, Professorin the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in Foundations
 
 
Dr. McKernan has published Curriculum and Imagination: Process Theory, Pedagogy, and Action Research. It describes an alternative ‘process’ model for designing developing, implementing and evaluating curriculum, suggesting that curriculum may be designed by specifying an educational process which contains key principles of procedure.

  

Dr. David Gabbard, Program Area Coordinator/Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in Foundations
 
Dr. Gabbard has published Knowledge & Power in the Global Economy: the Effects of School  Reform in a Neoliberal/ Neoconservative Age (2nd ed.). It looks at how these policies and the agendas behind them have impacted the internal dynamics of school management, teaching, and learning, as well as how they have transformed the external dynamics of education from a public good or service offered to serve public interests to a private enterprise primarily serving private interests. 

 

Dr. Katie O’Connor and Dr. AMy Good, Assistant Professors in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Education 
Dr. Good and Dr. O’Connor have recently published articles in various social studies and education journals and magazines. “We conduct research and write about the marginalization of social studies,” Dr. Good said.  Their research has appeared in Social Studies and the Young Learner, Theory and Research in Social Education, two in Social Studies Research and Practice, and in National School Board Journal.
 
 
Dr. Abbie Brown, Associate Professor in the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology
 
Dr. Brown published an article, “The Threat of Security,”in the magazine Learning and Leading with Technology. This magazine provides practical ideas and forward-thinking examinations of technology use in K-12, and teacher education. It is published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and is widely read by educators interested in the use of technology in the classroom.  Brown also has an article in The NCDLA e-Letter titled Preparing My Virtual Office: Using Second Life to Connect with Distant Students. “I teach online and I am constantly seeking opportunities to build a sense of community among my students.”

Brown, C.A. & Dotson, K. (2007) “Writing your own history: A cast study using digital primary source documents”, TechTrends Vol 51(3), pp. 31-37. A case study report on a collaborative project between East Carolina University and Jamesville High School in the use of online databases and for teaching writing and research skills in the area of social studies.

Karen S. Voytecki, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

Dr. Karen Voytecki was presented with the Kiwanian of the Year award by the Kiwanis Club of Pitt County Professionals.  She received this prestigious honor as a result of her work with Aktion Club of Kiwanis (composed of adults with special needs), Challenger Little League and TOPSoccer (for children with special needs), and other Kiwanis sponsored programs such as Terrific Kids, Bringing Up Grades, and dictionary donations for local elementary school children.
