LSIT Faculty and Staff Return from

North Carolina Library Association’s 56th Biennial Conference

Winston Salem, NC - Faculty and staff from the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology (LSIT) attended the North Carolina Library Association’s 56th Biennial Conference, held September 20-23, 2005, in Winston-Salem.  Those in attendance included Beth Briggs, Dr. Carol Brown, Kevin Cherry, Kaye Dotson, Dr. John Harer, Dr. Al Jones, Dr. Jami Jones, Dr. Diane Kester, Dr. Barbara Marson, Karen Mathis, Dr. Patrick Valentine, and Dr. Larry White.

LSIT faculty also gave a few presentations at the conference.  Kevin Cherry presented “Special Collections in Public Libraries.”  Dr. Jami Jones talked about “Working Together: How Public and School Librarians Build Resiliency in Children and Teens.” Dr. Carol Brown presented a poster session on “Framing Questions for Student Research;” Dr. John Harer presented a poster session on “Using Stories to Manage Libraries: A Project to Collect and Disseminate Stories for Library Management Success;” and Kaye Dotson presented a poster session on “The Library: The Source of Interprofessional Collaboration.”

Dr. Diane Kester was presented the NCLA Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Al Jones was presented the NCLA Special Presidential Recognition of Achievement from NCLA President Pauletta Bracy for his service on the editorial board and as editor of North Carolina Libraries, the NCLA journal.  Kevin Cherry was elected American Library Association (ALA) representative for NCLA on the ALA Council for 2005-09.

A full-page advertisement was placed by LSIT in the NCLA conference booklet proclaiming “Earn your Master of Library Science degree 100% online.” In July, LSIT received encouragement from the American Library Association (ALA) to move forward for accreditation. ALA accreditation is important to ECU’s LSIT programs since it will allow the department to offer library science tracks in academic and public librarianship in addition to the NCATE-approved track in school librarianship.  LSIT is conducting a precandidacy self study to be submitted to the ALA in December 2005.  If accepted as a precandidate, LSIT will begin a three-to-five-year candidacy process.  If granted initial ALA accreditation, LSIT will begin a seven-year continual accreditation process.
