College of Education Invited to Participate in
Teachers for a New Era Program

Chicago
, IL. – East Carolina University’s College of Education has been invited by The Carnegie Corporation of New York to participate in the Learning Network for The Teachers for a New Era (TNE) grantees program.  Andrew Carnegie established Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding."  A three-person team from ECU will attend a Learning Network meeting in Chicago, IL. November 14-15, 2005.  ECU team members are Dr. James Smith, Provost; Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, Dean of the College of Education; and Dr. Alan White, Dean of Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.  Representatives from 30 selected institutions will come together in Chicago with the 11 TNE grantees and their partner institutions for an initial working meeting on K-12 and teacher candidate assessment. Faculty and administrators from Learning Network institutions, such as East Carolina University and grantee institutions will work together to share information, explore issues, and generate ideas for cooperation and collaboration across sites.

According to The Carnegie Corporation of New York, recent research has established the quality of the teacher has a profound influence on pupil learning. Furthermore, some researchers assert the "teacher effect" can be considered the single most important factor in student achievement.   The Carnegie Corporation of New York  says the nation needs assurance that colleges and universities are educating prospective teachers of the highest quality possible.

The construction of excellent teacher education programs at selected colleges and universities known as Teachers for a New Era (TNE) is being undertaken by The Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Annenberg Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.   An external evaluation of the national impact of the initiative has begun with support from The Rockefeller Foundation.
