ECU’s Legislator’s School Develops Leadership in Youth
Greenville, NC – East Carolina University is gearing up for the 19th Annual Legislator’s School for Youth Leadership Development. The High School session will be held June 19th – July 2nd and Middle School session on July 10th – July 24th on the East Carolina University campus. This is a two-week residential summer program operated by the College of Education. There are two sessions held each summer for both middle school and high school grades. The program is currently funded by the North Carolina General Assembly to target young leaders in our state. The school gives students in rural areas of Eastern Carolina the unique opportunity to become better communicators and develop conflict resolution and problem-solving strategies. The goal of the program is not only to grow future leaders but also encourage students to give back to their communities through service learning.
The lessons The Legislator’s School teaches enables students to become effective leaders anywhere. The program uses The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People developed by Dr. Stephen Covey and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey as its framework. Legislator’s School benefits more outgoing students by showing them they can be an effective leader without being in charge. It also helps reserved students become more comfortable leading others.
Each year 250 students are selected to attend the Legislator’s School. Schools across Eastern Carolina are asked to nominate a total of two students, one boy and one girl. Students selected are those who show an interest in acquiring skills to increase personal accomplishment, responsible citizenship, interpersonal skills and their academic development.
