College of Education students in the ELEM 3235 classes are observing teaching in “real time” through teleobservation. Three teachers from Lenoir County Schools are participating in the interactive pre-service video-conference project from the end of September through the first week of October.  The College of Education appreciates the teachers and districts willing to open up their classrooms to allow ECU pre-service teachers to observe them teaching lessons in real time.

Technology and the use of videoconferencing enable pre-service teachers to have ‘field’ experiences without leaving campus.   Interactions with public school classrooms and children offer many more opportunities for learning in the context of a real classroom situation than what a traditional university classroom setting ever could. Video-conferencing also offers the unique advantage of providing pre-service teachers access to experienced teachers who can guide them in their journey of becoming a teacher.

Expert teachers are collaborating with the College of Education to allow ECU to use their teaching styles as models for the university students/pre-service teachers.  The Lenoir County teachers and staff participating in this teleobservation project are: Lee Holder, North Lenoir High School; Carol Edwards, Banks Elementary; Lisa Jenkins, Contentnea Elementary; David Edwards, Director of Technology; Phillip Decker, WAN Manager; and Mike Stafford, CyberCampus Manager/Distance Learning Coordinator.
