Dr. Joe Ciechalski – Department of Counselor and Adult Education (COAD)

CONFERENCE - SEPTEMBER 23, 2005

Title of the Workshop  :  “Changes in the NC Testing and Accountability Programs for the 2005-2006 School Year.” The featured speaker was Lou Fabrizio, Director of the Accountability Services Division of the NC Department of Public Instruction. The workshop was designed to inform school counselors about the changes in the testing programs this school year. Dr. Joseph C. Ciechalski, president of the North Carolina Association for Assessment in Counseling, coordinated the program and Drs. Florence Weaver and James Pinkney were the discussants.

NC Library Association presented her the NCLA Lifetime Achievement Award

 

Dr. Al JonesLSIT, chair

NC Library Association presented him with the NCLA Special Presidential Recognition of Achievement.  Dr. Jones awarded by NCLA President, Pauletta Bracy, for his service on the editorial board and as editor of North Carolina Libraries, the NCLA journal.
 

Dr. Vivian W. Mott, Chair of the Counselor & Adult Education Department, is the guest editor for a recent issue (Vol.14, Issue 2, 2005) of Adult Learning on best practices in adult and continuing education.  Dr. Mott’s opening article in the issue is entitled “Best Practices in Adult and Continuing Education: Dialogues about What Works.”  Among the contributing authors in the issue are Dr. Ralph Soney, Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction at Pitt Community College and Ms. Sharon Bland, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs at ECU. Dr. Soney’s article is focused on effective administrative practices in higher education; Ms. Bland’s article describes a developmental advising model for facilitating a successful collegiate experience for adult learners.


Robin Rider (Mathematics and Science Education) and Renea Baker (D.H. Conley High School) both attended the 27th Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA) in Roanoke, VA, October 20-23, 2005. Rider and Baker presented a paper entitled “Apply What You Know to a Problem You Have Never Seen: How AP Students Apply Statistical Reasoning to Solve a Task Using Empirical Data” in which they discussed their work in a collaborative research project involving students understanding of empirical data collection and the application of theoretical statistical procedures to analyze the data.  Rider and Baker are also members of the Probability Working Group for PME-NA, an international group of researchers who focus on research on Probability and stochastic reasoning.  Rider and Baker’s research was a focal point for discussion among the Probability Working Group members for this conference.
