Greenville, NC - The ECU chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) is pleased to announce that the guest speaker for the September 21, 2005 dinner meeting will be Mr. Terry Holland, Athletic Director at ECU since 2004. Phi Delta Kappa is a professional organization for public school educators, and university and community college faculty. The dinner meeting at Brook Valley Country Club begins at 6:00 PM. He will be discussing “Athletics and Academics at the College Level”. Holland is a North Carolina native with an outstanding record across the nation as a coach and athletic director.
Holland was named ECU’s Director if Athletics in 2004. From campuses in Charlottesville, Va., to Davidson, N.C., and in many basketball arenas across the nation and globe, Holland created a legacy and earned a reputation as a well-respected leader in collegiate athletics for nearly four decades. In the aspect of athletics administration, he has left enduring marks as director of programs at Davidson and Virginia.
Now, East Carolina intends to obtain high stakes nationally in competition, academic distinction, fan experience and image by capitalizing on Holland's unmatched reputation in management, marketing and coaching connections to all facets of the intercollegiate athletics business.
Holland is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He spent 16 seasons as head coach for U.Va., and became the most successful coach in Cavalier history, with a record of 326-173. Holland helped lead the Cavaliers to a pair of Final Four appearances (1981 and 1984) and a National Invitational Tournament title (1980) while earning two Atlantic Coast Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards.
He returned to his alma mater, Davidson College, in 1990 to become its athletic director. Five years later he was back in Charlottesville to take on the athletic director duties at U.Va. During Holland's tenure as athletic director, Virginia quickly moved to improve its facilities. With the help of generous alumni, Holland initiatives included: the $86 million expansion of Scott Stadium and creation of the Carl Smith Center; construction of the Aquatics and Fitness Center, home to Virginia's swimming and diving teams and one of the nation's top collegiate recreation facilities; expansion and naming of the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center; the University Hall Turf Field; and The Park, home to the Cavalier softball team.
In all, Holland completed his basketball coaching career with a total of 418 wins in 21 seasons, an impressive average of 19.8 wins per year. His NCAA Tournament record of 15-10 stands among the nation's top 20 in history for coaches who have appeared in 10 or more post-season games.
