Pirate CODE: Instructional Coaching

Purpose

Instructional coaches are introduced in the senior semesters to maximize teacher candidates growth in the year-long internship experience through instructional coaching of performance. Instructional coaches become part of the candidate support team.

Process

Instructional coaches are hired from partnering school districts to mentor teacher candidates in best practices, conduct in-class observations, and provide targeted professional development.

Multiple research measures indicate the coaching model has yielded statistically significant gains in teacher candidate edTPA performance assessment results, increases in the use of instructional practices, with potential to change the teaching effectiveness trajectory of first year teachers while leading to positive gains in teacher candidate performance and K-12 student achievement.

As ISLES modules are fully embedded in coursework, faculty will continue to integrate the materials and resources in the ISLES modules more explicitly.
