Pre-service candidates will develop a common framework of instructional practices that highlight 10 effective evidence-based strategies for increasing student achievement through a series of 3 online Instructional Strategy Lessons for Educators Series (ISLES) modules.
Three modules based on declarative, procedural, and conditional knowledge were developed and imbedded into introductory courses, methods courses, and advanced courses. The final module, ISLES 3, requires teacher candidates to plan, instruct, and assess a lesson that includes use of ISLES strategies. Critical reflection then occurs with faculty.
The ISLES framework provides a finite set of instructional strategies to use when working with novice teacher candidates. The modules allow teacher candidates to build their knowledge of the instructional strategies as they progress through the program. The establishment of a common language in high leverage practices is critical in developing expertise in novice teacher candidates.
As ISLES modules are fully embedded in coursework, faculty will continue to integrate the materials and resources in the ISLES modules more explicitly.
