Rural Education Institute

 

Mission

 

The College of Education at East Carolina University recognizes the unique strengths and needs of rural educators and administrators in eastern North Carolina.  To assist rural educators with the challenges they face in today’s twenty-first century schools, the Rural Education Institute within the Office of Professional Development is committed to partnering with the public schools in eastern North Carolina for the purposes of rural education research, staff development, and student outreach.

 

Goals and Objectives

  • To serve as the College of Education’s central dissemination point for continuing education opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers and administrators at the local, state, regional, national, and international level
    • Provide electronic information portal for staff development and CEU-bearing opportunities from ECU
    • Approve CEUs for teacher education opportunities across the ECU campus
    • Share continuing education opportunities with the SE Alliance and NE RESA
    • Support the LCSN’s Annual Clinical Teacher Conference
    • Host Graduate Research Seminar with a rural education focus

  • To disseminate to public school and university partners in eastern North Carolina information about outreach and student programs offered through East Carolina University
    • Host Legislator’s School for Youth Leadership Development
    • Facilitate Teacher Cadet and Future Teachers of America partnerships
    • Facilitate GEAR UP programs
    • Facilitate Why Teach? programs
    • Provide educational experiences and opportunities which might not otherwise be available to students in rural eastern North Carolina

  • To connect faculty and graduate students with the Latham Clinical Schools Network for the purpose of research and to link faculty expertise and university resources with public school partners
    • Invite faculty seeking research opportunities to address the LCSN Advisory Board
    • Create a directory of COE faculty expertise
    • Create a directory of staff development coordinators in the LCSN
    • Hold quarterly meetings with staff development coordinators from LCSN member systems
    • Maintain NCDPI reports for COE faculty and graduate students seeking school districts with specific characteristics

  • To utilize the REI Outreach Grants to provide funding for doctoral students in the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and proposed Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction programs, to conduct research in rural areas, and to support university and public school partnerships for the purpose of research
    • Provide funding opportunities for doctoral students in Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and proposed Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction programs for dissertation and other research projects in rural eastern North Carolina
    • Encourage COE faculty to seek rural public school partners for research

  • To collect data regarding CEU bearing activities to ensure high quality programming focused on the needs and issues faced by rural educators
  • Maintain a database of service/outreach conducted in the LCSN
  • Facilitate the feedback/evaluation of OPD/REI program

  • To increase the visibility, reputation, and impact of the College of Education with regard to professional development and research focused on the issues and challenges experienced by schools and systems in rural areas
    • Maintain the Office of Professional Development/Rural Education Institute website
    • Distribute OPD/REI materials to LCSN
    • Distribute Legislator’s School for Youth Leadership Development information
    • Attend SE Alliance and NE RESA meetings as the ECU College of Education representative
