College of Education alums honored with teaching awards

Two East Carolina University College of Education alumni were recently honored with teaching awards in North Carolina. Julie Brickhouse, a special education teacher at Wahl Coates Elementary School of the Arts, was named the Pitt County Schools Teacher of the Year on Wednesday, March 14, at Rock Springs Center. C.M. Eppes Middle School science teacher recipient of inaugural John C. Park Scholarship

When the opportunity came to attend the annual National Science Teachers Association National Conference on Science Education, Allie Smith, an eighth-grade science teacher at C.M. Eppes Middle School in Greenville, jumped at the chance. The opportunity arose through a new annual award for science teachers in eastern North Carolina — the John C. ECU faculty helps shape statewide mathematics education framework

The framework for the future of mathematics education in North Carolina was recently established by a collection of mathematics educators around the state, including several representatives with ties to the East Carolina University College of Education. Announced by the North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning (NC2ML) in February, the K-8 Instructional Frameworks are designed to connect and sequence mathematical ideas to enable teachers to plan learning opportunities for students that promote a coherent understanding of mathematics. State Teacher of the Year Stops by ECU College of Education

The East Carolina University College of Education hosted Lisa Godwin, the 2017 North Carolina Teacher of the Year for two events on Monday, Oct. 30. Godwin, who is a kindergarten teacher at Dixon Elementary School in Onslow County, was named the North Carolina Teacher of the Year in August 2017. College of Education Inducts 18 into Educators Hall of Fame

The College of Education at East Carolina University held its 19th annual Educators Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 28, in the Fletcher Music Center. A group of 18 educators and education advocates were recognized during an event that raised over $27,000 for student scholarships. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in Speight Building for inductees and guests to view the Educators Hall of Fame wall.
