During the past nine, Project HEART, our AmeriCorps tutoring program on the ECU campus, has placed college and high school students in schools and after-school programs to serve as tutors at-risk elementary, middle, and high school students. Our program began in the fall of 2000 with 48 Half-Time members. Since that time, our program has increased in membership to include 74 Half-Time members and 85 Minimum-Time members. Our program has helped hundreds of children to succeed in school. Last year 97% of the children served made academic progress and were promoted to the next grade.
"My 2 years with Project HEART helped me get practical experience in working with at-risk youth. Due to my term of service I am currently interning to be a Child Advocate in the Wake County Court system."
-Jacquetta Thomas, 2008-2010 Pitt County Project HEART member
"Due to my service with Project HEART I have decided to go into the education field. I want to teach High School English and continue to make a difference in the lives of children."
