AmeriCorps/ECU Project HEART

Member Service Requirements

Year: August 1, 2010 – July 31, 2011

PURPOSE: 

 

The purpose of your AmeriCorps membership is to make a difference in local communities by helping students achieve academically and understand the importance of giving back to their community. As a Project HEART participant, you provide tutoring services and additional support to help students succeed in school, develop self esteem, and understand the importance of continuing their education and graduating from high school.

 

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

 

v      Attend Orientation training in August and other training sessions throughout the year

v      Tutor students one-to-one or in small groups to help students improve their academic performance (approximately 20 hours per week from August 2010 to July 2011)

v      Build trusting relationships with tutees and help tutees experience academic success and increase self-esteem

v      Work with classroom teachers and parents to help students learn

v      Continually evaluate and improve your tutoring expertise

v      Keep regular and accurate records/timesheets of tutoring sessions and other required activities

v      Participate in 4 National Identity Day community service events

v      Recruit 6 volunteers

v      Attend the two state-wide AmeriCorps conferences

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

 

v      Must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident

v      Must be 18 years of age (17 with parental permission)

v      Must have minimum 2.5 GPA

v      Must be full time student in a university, community college, or approved educational program

v      Must have a positive criminal background check and sex offender registry check

v      Must have previous volunteer experience or related activities

 

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

v      Exhibit a genuine interest and enthusiasm for tutoring students

v      Exhibit professional behavior at all times

v      Be able to effectively manage time and schedules

v      Be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

v      Be responsible, reliable and punctual

 

COMPENSATION:

 

v      $450.00 monthly Living Allowance (not to exceed $5400 for the 12-month year of service)

v      $2,675 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award
