STEM-Corps East is an AmeriCorps tutoring and enrichment program focused on improving K-12 student achievement in math and science.

As a STEM-Corps East Member, you are placed in a school or after-school program where you will serve as a tutor for students who are struggling in math and science classes.  You will be part of a diverse team of STEM Tutors working under the direction of on-site supervisors. Throughout your 12-month term of service, you and other members will engage students in STEM curriculum activities, participate in training activities and community service events, and recruit volunteers. 

Responsibilities

The AmeriCorps STEM-Corps East service year begins September 22, 2017, and concludes August 31, 2018. To successfully complete the service term and be eligible for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, a half-time member must complete a minimum of 900 hours of service during the 12-month contract.  During their term of service, members’ responsibilities will include:

  • “STEM Tutoring”
    • Report to your school site at least 3 times each week to assist classroom teachers in the delivery of the NC Standard Course of Study STEM curriculum in classrooms as well as STEM laboratories.
      OR
    • Report to your after-school site at least 4 times each week to assist site directors in the delivery of STEM enrichment activities.
  • “Participate in National Days of Service Projects”:
    • Participate in at least two (2) required National Days of Service events:  9/11 and MLK Day
  • “STEM Fair”
    • Participate in the summer STEM Fair in August 2018
  • “Community Service”
    • Participate in local community service events sponsored by the STEM-Corps East office
  • “Recruitment of Volunteers”
    • Recruit at least four (4) volunteers.
  • “Training Events”
    • Attend required Orientation training in September that includes face-to-face and online training events.
    • Attend other required quarterly training sessions throughout the service year.
  • “Documenting Service”
    • Time Sheets in OnCorps
    • Tutoring Logs
    • Volunteer Logs

  •  Living allowance of $5,000 for half-time members
