Project STEPP Application Instructions
- Check eligibility criteria for identification with a Learning Disability at East Carolina University (http://www.ecu.edu/dss/Guidelines_learning.asp). Project STEPP is designed to serve students who qualify for services in this specific area. Please ensure that this applies to you prior to sending in an application.
- Print and complete in pen a copy of the Project STEPP application.
- Complete the personal essay using the prompt provided in the application packet.
- Complete Section 1 of the Teacher Recommendation Form yourself prior to giving the form to your teachers. Address an envelope to the Project STEPP office (see address below) and put a stamp on the envelope. Give the forms and the addressed envelopes to at least two of your teachers.
- Obtain a copy of your latest psychological evaluation or re-evaluation. If you question whether or not this information is current enough to be considered by the ECU Office of Disability Support Services (DSS), please contact the Project STEPP office or the ECU DSS office directly.
- Request that a copy of your transcript/s be sent to the Project STEPP office at ECU (see address below).
- Obtain a copy of your SAT or ACT scores and mail this copy directly to the STEPP office. We need this even if a copy had been sent to the ECU Admissions Office.
- Complete and sign the form giving the Project STEPP staff permission to disclose information in your application to the Office of Disability Support Services and the ECU Admissions office. Without this form, your application cannot be processed. It will be necessary for the DSS office to have access to your application information to determine eligibility for services as a student with a learning disability at ECU. This eligibility determination is a prerequisite to the remainder of the application being considered for Project STEPP.
- Mail the application (including the personal essay), the copy of the psychological evaluation, and a copy of the SAT/ACT scores to the address below.
- In order to be accepted to Project STEPP, you must also complete and submit an online application for East Carolina University, which can be found at this link: http://www.ecu.edu/admissions/apps.cfm
Because the Project STEPP application timeline differs from the university’s application timeline, you will not be able to submit your ECU application at the same time as your Project STEPP application. In general, the ECU application becomes available approximately one year before a student’s intended enrollment date (i.e., approximately August of 2010 for a fall 2011 enrollment). We strongly encourage students who have applied to Project STEPP to submit their ECU applications as soon as possible; however, please do not attempt to submit an ECU application if your intended enrollment date is not yet an option in the online application system. After submitting an application to Project STEPP, you will need to watch the ECU website closely and follow the standard application process as soon as your intended enrollment date becomes available.
