How to Find a New Major

3 Steps to Finding a New Major:

  • Step 1:
Explore careers and ECU majors using the Career Center's FOCUS 2 career and major exploration tool.  This will help you identify majors at ECU that fit your career aspirations.
  • Step 2:
Access major information using ECU's central advising website: www.ecu.edu/advising.  It is especially helpful to view degree plans.  These will help you to see the sequence of courses you would be required to take in the majors that interest you.  Are there a lot of sciences? Are there a lot of math courses? See what it looks like and determine if it will be a good match for you.  Continue to research the majors that interest you and include courses you feel comfortable taking.  Access other resources found on this central advising website, search ECU's website, view program/advising websites, etc.  Make sure to view what is listed under the major in the online undergraduate catalog (see left hand menu for link) and also the college’s website.
Things to determine: what courses are required, minimum GPA for major, are there special admission requirements (like declaring requirements or an application process), how far along you would be if you switched your major, career opportunities, etc.
  • Step 3:
Meet with an advisor for your new intended major.  Talk to him/her about the required courses, requirements and career opportunities.  View here to get the advisor’s name and contact info.
If your GPA is under a 2.0 and you want to change majors, click here for a resource that identifies minimum GPA requirements for undergraduate majors at ECU.  Please note that some of these majors may still have very competitive admission requirements.
