How to Declare Your Major

Once you have met the requirements for your major to declare (see Advising Syllabus for these requirements), follow the directions below:

  • NOTE that Dept of RCLS Majors have a separate APPLICATION policy for declaring.
  • NOTE that Athletic Training has a selection process which involves an interview and evaluation.  Selection is competitive.

Department of Kinesiology and Health Education and Promotion* Declaring Process:

  • Contact your current advisor, your advisor will:
    • Update your records to reflect that you are eligible to declare and ask that your records be updated in banner.
    • Give you contact info for your new declared advisor.

* Excluding Athletic Training majors.

Department of RCLS Application Process for Recreational Therapy and Recreation Park Management majors: (RCLS)

Recreational Therapy:

  • Meet with your current advisor to discuss when you will be applying.  Applications and interviews are held 3 times a year, once in the fall, once in the spring and once during Summer Session 1.
    • To be eligible to apply, all applicants need to have a 2.0 GPA or higher and be within 10 hours of completing their 42 hours of foundations curriculum prior to acceptance and be currently enrolled or finished with RCTX 2230 Intro to Rec Therapy and RCLS 2000 Intro to Rec and Leisure.
    • Go over online application and interview process with current advisor.  A preview of the online application may be found here.
  • Submit online application and ensure all documentation for completed practicum hours have been added to your electronic advising folder by the deadline given.  The RCLS Department will email you to set up a time for an interview to discuss your application and answer any questions you might have regarding the program.
  • If accepted, you will be:
    • Assigned to a new declared advisor.  From this point you will work with your new advisor.
    • Assigned to a faculty mentor.

Recreation Park Management:

  • Submit online application.  The application may be found online here
  • Send an email to your current advisor letting him/her know you submitted your application.  In the email, you MUST include your:
    • Banner ID
    • Cell Phone Number
    • RPM Concentration
      • Commercial Recreation & Tourism
      • Community & Non-Profit
      • Outdoor Recreation
      • Recreational Sports Leadership
    • Minor (if you have one)
  • After contacting your current advisor, you will be:
    • Assigned to a new declared advisor.  From this point you will work with your new advisor.
    • Assigned to a faculty mentor.

Athletic Training Candidacy Process: (AT)

  • Meet with your current advisor during the spring semester (second semester of candidacy) to set up fall and/or summer courses based on your intended major.  Students wanting to continue in the Athletic Training program from the candidacy phase need to express their intent to continue.
  • The Athletic Training Faculty will meet at the end of the spring semester to interview candidates and make selections on who will continue in the program.
  • Your folder will be sent to the Athletic Training department if requested by the faculty.  If you are not selected, your folder will remain with the advising center.
    • If you are selected, you will be assigned to a faculty mentor and a declared advisor.
    • If you are not selected, speak to your current advisor about options.  You will need to decide if you want to repeat the candidacy phase or switch to a new major.  Your Advisor can assist with this decision making process.
