How to Declare Your Major
Once you have met the requirements for your major to declare (see Advising Syllabus), follow the directions below:
* NOTE that Dept of RCLS majors have a separate APPLICATION policy for declaring.
**NOTE that the Athletic Training department has a selection process which involves an interview and evaluation. Selection is competitive.
Department of Exercise and Health* Declaring Process:
- Meet with your current advisor, your advisor will:
- Update your records to reflect that you are ready to declare.
- Give you contact info for your major’s program director.
- Give you your folder (if you have a paper folder).
- You will contact your major’s program director (see below for contact info) and set an appointment to declare.
- If you have a paper folder, take your folder to the meeting! If you have an electronic folder, these materials will be sent electronically to your major’s program director.
- At the meeting, your major’s program director will:
- Assign you to a faculty advisor. From this point you will work with your new advisor.
- Give you a major change “declare” form that you will need to take the Registrar’s Office.
- Email your new faculty advisor.
- Introduce yourself (to ensure your new advisor knows he/she has a new advisee).
- Get to know your new advisor’s schedule/office hours.
- Ask about his/her pre-registration appointment process.
- Be sure to check your email regularly.

- Faculty advisors have many responsibilities so their schedule may not be as flexible. A lot more individual responsibility for course scheduling and registration will be on you.
- MAKE SURE to submit your major change “declare” form to the Registrar’s Office!
- Turn this form in as soon as possible to avoid difficulty during registration. The sooner this form is turned in, the sooner the Registrar’s Office can classify you declared so Banner will recognize this during registration.
You may always return to the HHP Advising Center if you have difficulty and need assistance!

Department of RCLS Application Process for Recreational Therapy and Recreation Park Management majors: (RCLS)
Recreational Therapy:
- Meet with your current advisor to discuss when you will be applying. Applications and interviews are held 3 times a year, once in the fall, once in the spring and once during Summer Session 1.
- To be eligible to apply, all applicants need to have a 2.0 GPA or higher and be within 10 hours of completing their 42 hours of foundations curriculum prior to acceptance and be currently enrolled or finished with RCTX 2230 Intro to Rec Therapy and RCLS 2000 Intro to Rec and Leisure).
- Go over application and interview process with current advisor. Applications are found at http://www.ecu.edu/rcls/rt.cfm click “application form.”
- Turn in typed application and official Advising Folder (check out from advisor) and submit to RT Program Director, in Belk 1413. The program director will email you to set up a time for an interview to discuss your application and answer any questions you might have regarding the program.
- After you declare, your major’s program director will:
- Assign you to a faculty advisor. From this point you will work with your new advisor.
- Give you a major change “declare” form that you will need to take the Registrar’s Office.
- Email your new faculty advisor.

- Contact your major’s program director (see below for contact info) and set an appointment to go over application and declare.
- At the meeting, your major’s program director will:
- Go over your application and answer any questions you might have regarding the program.
- Assign you to a faculty advisor. From this point you will work with your new advisor.
- Give you a major change “declare” form that you will need to take the Registrar’s Office.
- Email your new faculty advisor.
- Introduce yourself (to ensure your new advisor knows he/she has a new advisee).
- Get to know your new advisor’s schedule/office hours.
- Ask about his/her pre-registration appointment process.
- Be sure to check your email regularly.

Athletic Training Candidacy Process: (AT)
- Meet with your current advisor during the spring semester (second semester of candidacy) to set up fall and/or summer courses based on your intended major. Students wanting to continue in the Athletic Training program from the candidacy phase need to express their intent to continue.
- Make sure to be aware of the requirements that are required to make it past candidacy: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-hhp/hlth/athletictr/upload/Admisison_to_the_Major_Criteria-2.pdf.
- The Athletic Training Faculty will meet at the end of the spring semester to interview candidates and make selections on who will continue in the program.
- Your folder will be sent to the Athletic Training department if requested by the faculty. If you are not selected, your folder will remain with the advising center.
- If you are selected, you will be assigned to a faculty advisor. From this point you will work with your new advisor in Athletic Training.
- You will be notified who your new advisor is.
- Email your new faculty advisor.
- Get to know your new advisor’s schedule/office hours.
- Ask about his/her pre-registration appointment process.
- Be sure to check your email regularly.

- If you are not selected, speak to your current advisor about options. You will need to decide if you want to repeat the candidacy phase or switch to a new major. Your Advisor can assist with this decision making process.
