After-School Activity Program

Purpose:

To provide an after-school program that focuses on physical activity in a safe, fun, and positive environment. Activities include inline skating, scooters, sports, fitness activities, games, etc.

Research Project Description:
The research project will be examining the effectiveness of an after-school program on physical activity, aerobic fitness, body composition, and perceived physical competence in children.

Who can participate in this program?
Children ages 5-12 years old. A total of up to 30 children will be enrolled each semester.

Who is in charge of the research study?
Dr. Matthew Mahar and Mrs. Rhonda Kenny. Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) will help run the study at the after-school program. PALs are undergraduate and graduate students who work with program participants. They make sure the study is going as planned, collect information, lead activities and games being played during the day and watch over the children.

Schedule:
The after-school activity program will begin on the first day of the public school calendar and end on the last day of the public school calendar. The program will operate from 2:30-5:45 pm in Christenbury Gym.
The program will not operate during holidays or teacher work-days when Pitt County Schools are closed, unless special arrangements have been made.

Daily Schedule:
3:00-3:30 pm: Supervised Free Play
3:30-4:00 pm: Snack
4:00-4:30 pm: Group Activity
4:30-5:00 pm: Homework Time
5:00-5:45 pm: Games/Physical Activities
