Ashley Scudiero Hi! My name is Ashley Scudiero, and I am a freshman in the Honors Program at East Carolina University. We had to do a service-learning project as a requirement of my health class, so I did mine with The Family Violence Program of Pitt County. The Family Violence Program, located at 823 Evans Street here in Greenville, offers so much to the community, especially those who are or have been victims of domestic abuse. The following are some of their services: - Information and referrals
- Group and individual counseling for children and adults
- Parenting skills classes, nurturing classes for children who have been victim to domestic violence
- Displaced homemakers’ program
- New Directions Safe House
- Legal help for domestic violence victims
- My Sister’s Closet – resale store whose proceeds go to benefit New Directions, as well as their counseling/education/legal services
I was really excited to be working for such a well-organized and noble cause. For my project, I was surprised to be doing research, more of a hands-off project than most other kids did. I didn’t mind, however, I learned from this experience that I personally prefer doing more interactive activities. What I did was I first researched safety precautions for various situations, particularly pertaining to the elderly. Then, using those procedures, I created pamphlets to be distributed at the Safety Exposition for the elderly, which is being held in April. The research was not as easy as I thought it was going to be, because some safety procedures are standards, regardless of age or gender. I had to do some extensive research on some of the topics I was given, to find those precautions that specifically could help prevent the elderly from being injured. This project was a real eye-opener for me. I learned to take more into consideration with regards to other people, and to be more aware of the problems elderly people face. Younger people don’t normally think about what it’s like being older, or what health issues they might face when they grow old. Many issues that elderly people face today could have been prevented in their younger years, had they taken care of themselves better (ie. exercise, eat healthy, avoid smoking and excessive drinking). It is important to take care of ourselves now, so as to avoid problems later in life.
