In fulfilling my service learning project, I placed myself at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. As a volunteer, there were many responsibilities that I had to learn and be trained to perform. I was only trained in three different areas. Whenever I worked in the North Tower, I worked on two separate floors. My duties here were to give out visitor passes to anyone seeking to visit one of the patients. I had to put my foot down a few times whenever visitors insisted on seeing a patient even when it was not visiting hours. The hospital has very strict visiting hours due to the severity of the patients’ health. I also worked in the GI Lab where I had to transport patients out to their cars whenever they were being discharged. I also had the responsibility of cleaning the beds by sanitizing them and changing the sheets. Volunteers are very important to the hospital. To most of the workers at the hospital, I was not just a volunteer; I was part of the staff.
My goals in doing this type of service learning were to find my niche. I wanted to learn what I could do to help people in today’s society through the medical field. I learned that the health field is very fragile. The patients have several needs, especially the ones that were in the cardiac unit, that need to be satisfied and my job was to do this for them. I helped not only the patients, but also the nurses and doctors that were taking care of the patients. Throughout the course of my volunteering, my goal was definitely achieved. I learned that my job in life is to be in the medical field and to help people in any type of situation. Giving some of the visitors someone to talk to helped them see hope in the future, hope for tomorrow.
