Becky HardyBecky Hardy

My name is Becky Hardy and I am a freshman here at East Carolina University.  For my Health and Services class, I was required to volunteer at least twenty-five hours with a particular organization.  I chose to volunteer through the Pirate Pals, an on campus club.  In this club we are devoted to the children of the hospital who suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer, hemophilia, and sickle cell anemia.  The club raises money for activities for the children such as Halloween and Christmas parties.  Not only does the club raise money for these events, it also organizes and facilitates them.  Members of the club are able to interact with children who spend much of their time in and out of the hospital and need that extra love and attention.

My twenty-five hours were spent raising money through candle sales, football games, and going around asking for donations.  I was also able to help the children decorate bags for trick-or-treating at Halloween and facilitate games and serve food at the festive Christmas party along with Santa and Mrs. Claus.  I was honored to work with some amazing, devoted officers and members of the club who wanted nothing more than to see the children smile.  I too couldn’t help but find the smiling faces of the children not only rewarding, but also very contagious.  Pirate Pals was great to me and I am looking forward to being involved with them in the coming years.
