What they do:
The special populations office of the Greenville Parks and Recreation provides year-round athletic events and competitions for members of the community with disabilities.  It also gives parts of the community without disabilities an opportunity to get involved, make a difference, and perhaps build some friendships with people they otherwise would not have built.

My experience:
There are a million different things a volunteer can do to help out with the athletic events.  There are county, state, and national competitions that have teams who need coaches.  I coached a basketball skills team for the Pitt County tournament, and I also chaperoned on the Special Olympics Fall Games 2005 trip.  Volunteering does not require much, just a good attitude and an open mind.  We all had such a good time, and I made so many friends; I never once felt like I was working.  From the dance party to the actual competitions for events like bowling and roller skating, there was not a minute that was not fun and crazy!
