Dianna WilliamsDianna Williams
Hello, my name is Dianna Williams. For my Service Learning project I worked at The Greenville Branch of The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.  During most of the hours I worked I spent time sorting sweet potatoes into bags that were then distributed to the agencies that depend on food from the Food Bank.  The goal was to make sure that the food given out was of a good quality.  Basically we had to weed out all of the inedible sweet potatoes and throw them away.  During some of the hours I sorted cans.  Again, the goal was quality control if the cans had damage to the ends that made it unable to be opened then they had to be discarded.  Oddly enough the cans were full of sweet potatoes.

Working at the Food Bank does a lot of good in the community.  The Greenville Food Bank serves 11 counties and countless hungry people.  The Food Bank not only delivers food it also delivers non food essentials.  For example, diapers, toilet paper, soap, and other toiletries.  The Food Bank does priceless work that spreads all over North Carolina.
I learned a lot about Pitt County.  I learned that 20 percent of the population is under the poverty line in Pitt County.  I also learned about all of the agencies in Pitt County that work with the families under the poverty line.  A lot of those agencies get their food directly from The Food Bank then they distribute it to the people in need.  I learned about The Food Bank also they serve 11 counties, 1,992,134 pounds of food in a year, and many other agencies inside those counties.  The Food Bank is such a big part of the community that it has over 55 major donors.
