MAT in Health Education

General Overview
The MAT is a 39 hour graduate program that is typically one-year in length (13 months). It allows adult candidates who have a bachelor’s degree to earn a master’s degree and a license (G level) simultaneously.

Applying
The program requires a regular graduate school application that includes GRE or Miller Analogy Test scores (candidate’s choice) plus 3 letters of reference. Candidates must have a degree from a regionally accredited institution. If a candidate passes through stage one of admission (meets graduate school minimum requirements in terms of standardized test score and GPA (need at least a cumulative 2.5), the next step is a writing sample and interview with the program coordinator. Graduate applications can be gotten through the graduate school at ECU. Candidates who don’t meet graduate school criteria can enter via licensure only.

Structure of the Program
The full-time program begins in the summer each year (summer two term) and runs for 13 months. It is full-time in terms of course load and requirements. During the year, classes can be held during the day or the evening (depending on the licensure track) and requires a full-time internship, commonly called student teaching at other institutions. Candidates in the program are placed in cohorts which build community and support for the candidates.
