Jennifer Schreyer My objective was to raise the awareness of colon cancer. Many people do not understand that colon cancer is a top killer in our country and I believe it's time for the word to be spread. I worked with a friend of mine, Dorothy Wu, who is also in Health 1050, and together we set up a booth on campus to hand out fliers, ribbons, and notices about colon cancer's prevalence in the United States and steps one can take to reduce his or her risk of acquiring it. We were successful in handing out many fliers and answering many of the questions the people asked. Many people were unaware that colon cancer is the 2nd most common cause of cancer deaths in America. We hope that the individuals who received our information will spread the word to their families and friends about the severity of colon cancer. This project was done in memory of my Godmother - Kathy Winkles - and the mother of one of Dorothy's close friends who both suffered from colon cancer and were eventually taken by the disease. We hope to prevent others from experiencing the same loss. This project was meant to help the physical wellness of members of our society. Maintaining one’s health is crucial to living a long life, and by taking preventative measures and getting regular screening, people greatly increase their chances of living a long, healthy life. Two-thirds of colon cancer cases in which the patient dies could have been prevented if the disease had been caught early on. Education is key to knowledge, and we hope that by our efforts to raise the awareness of colon cancer, people will take the measures necessary to prevent it.
